The Miner's Cottage, Otago Rail Trail accommodation, HYDE

The Miner's Cottage
Vivien & Gordon Jones
Rapid 9609 State Highway 87

RD3 Hyde, Ranfurly 9397

Directions

When standing on the Capburn Railbridge at Tiroiti, ( on the Rail Trail), The Miner's Cottage accommodation can be seen amongst a stand of large Lombardy poplars directly across Highway 87 (sealed) to the west.

The Miner's Cottage is situated opposite the historic Capburn Railbridge in the Tiroiti valley which lies in the foothills between the Maniototo and Strath Taieri plains. The  Maori meaning of Tiroiti is "Valley of Little View".

From Daisy Bank, 5kms to the north, to Hyde, 6 kms to the south, the Taieri River and the Otago Rail Trail run in tandem through the beautiful Tiroiti gorge where the spectacular Capburn bridge, Price's Creek Viaduct, Prices Creek Rail Tunnel and the Taieri river diversion tunnel can all be viewed. A group of volcanic cones are also evident against the skyline, adding to the diversity of the geographical features to be seen along this section of the  Rail Trail.

During the late 19th century, as the Otago Central railway progressed, construction gangs made camp along the way. Tiroiti village was one such encampment with it's own shops, churches and a school. Later it was a stock siding. Now the peaceful valley is home to only two second generation farming families with all the original buildings and accommodation having disappeared. The numerous large Lombardy poplars, rocky outcrops and willows fringing the river are typical of the Central Otago landscape.
